The fifth International ORCiM Seminar, organised at the Orpheus Institute, offers the opportunity for contributors from around the world to gather and explore specific aspects of ORCiM’s research focus: Artistic Experimentation in Music.

Traces, Faces and Spaces of Artistic Research

When an artistic experiment happens, what is the nature of those elements that continue to resonate and those that evaporate? Whose face is laid bare and who will witness it? And when an artistic experiment ends, what traces remain, what faces are unmasked and what spaces are thrown open?

Informed by interdisciplinary knowledge and practices, experimentation is inherent to artistic research but its traces are often elusive and difficult to frame.  At the outset of an artistic experiment, the practising artist determines its contours and conditions; but in most respects, the event’s consequences are unforeseen, transient, open-ended and often idiosyncratic.

After an experiment in the arts has taken place, some of its faces become maps inviting further exploration, while others form epistemic overviews that can help to elucidate and disseminate the otherwise invisible processes inherent in an artistic practice. Still other traces remain unacknowledged or disappear, due to their extreme resistance to traditional modes of communication and understanding.

This two-day international seminar aims at exploring the complex impact of experimentation in artistic practice and artistic research. The Orpheus Institute welcomes proposals for presentations, compositions or performances that create conjunctions and disjunctions around the three notions of faces, traces and spaces of the artistic experiment.

 

Within this context, questions of particular interest include:
• What remains hidden, what is discovered, what disappears, once an artistic experiment is ended?
• What kind of traces does an artistic experiment leave? Epistemic? Experiential? … And where can these traces be found? In an artistic output? In a research output? 
• How will the artist cope with the consequences of the experiment? Which faces are altered, which faces are discovered and which faces remain? 
• Which spaces are opened by the artistic experiment?  What is the experiment's impact upon its surrounding context in terms of materials, cultures, history and practices?
• How can the outcome of artistic experimentation be of benefit to the artistic and the broader world? 

 

The seminar will be relevant for artists and music practitioners working in areas of research linked to artistic experimentation. Proposals related to all aspects of the seminar topic are welcome. The submissions should contribute to greater insight into how art unfolds, opening new possibilities for artistic creation and reception.

William Brooks and Paulo de Assis complete the research evaluation panel.

The seminar will take place at the Orpheus Institute in Ghent, Belgium from Wednesday 20 February 2013 (beginning at 13:30) to Thursday 21 February 2013 (ending at 16:00).

Registration:

Registration fee €50. (The fee includes coffee breaks, a Wednesday dinner and Thursday lunch.)

 

Note: Free for all full-time conservatory students under the age of 26.And; Participants whose proposals have been accepted, and who will thus be presenting during the seminar, do not pay the admission fee!
